Executive Bio:Danielle Robertson Founder/Editor-N-Chief, Heavy Weights Magazine www.DanielleRobertson@HeavyWeightsMagazine.com
Danielle Robertson is the owner and founder of Heavy Weights Magazine, a full-figured lifestyle magazine based in Detroit, Mich. After its print launch in 2008, Danielle decided to restructure the magazine to be online, scheduled to launch spring 2010. Owner Danielle has recruited hands-on talented staff with a combined total of over 30 years of related industry knowledge to create the platform for her vision. As a plus-size woman herself, Danielle noticed the demographic was not getting the appropriate attention needed. She has a passion to uplift, inspire, and empower her readers to live a confident lifestyle despite opposition. “It makes me feel good making a difference in someone’s life,” she says. Initially, the idea to start the magazine came to Danielle in the mid 90s after being laid-off as a sale associate at Sizes Unlimited, a plus-size retail store in Ann Arbor, Mich. The chain store closed due to low sales and low quality apparel. Prior to working at Sizes Unlimited, for several years Danielle struggled to balance work, school, and care taking for two terminally ill family members— her mother and her Godfather. She worked at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ypsilanti, Mich., while pursuing an education at Washtenaw Community College. After coping with the loss of her mother to a long battle with cancer, in 1998 she received her first associates degree in Liberal Arts and in 2001 her second in Respiratory Therapy. While taking care of her ill Godfather, Danielle had to lift him and he referenced her strength as being his “Heavy Weight.” The name stuck with Danielle and became the inspiration behind the magazine. Despite a life full of turmoil and tribulation, Danielle Robertson has set her goals high and is reaching to achieve them. Using Heavy Weights Magazine as a platform, Danielle hopes to inspire men and women across the county to have acceptance for their body size and type. Danielle is currently studying at Wayne State University, and is six classes away from receiving a bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences.
